Mountains, Kate pens messy, sexy, angst-filled contemporary romance, as USA Today bestselling author and Texas native, Kate Stewart, lives in Looking back, I’m convinced I willed my story into existence due to my illness. At least that was the case for me and the men I trusted my foolish heart to. You can’t re-live your own love story, because by the time you’ve realized you’re living it, it’s over. That’s the novelty of fiction versus reality. Secrets that cost us everything to keep. But in order to keep them, I had to be in on their secrets. Triple Falls wasn’t at all what it seemed, nor were the men that swept me under their wing. I gave into temptation and fed the beating beast, which grew thirstier with every slash, every strike, every blow. When I lived this story, my own twisted fairy tale, it was unbeknownst to me at the time because I was young and naïve. I grew up believing that real love stories include a martyr or demand great sacrifice to be worthy.īecause of that, I believed it, because I made myself believe it, and I bred the most masochistic of romantic hearts, which resulted in my illness.

Shine Bright is an overdue paean to musical masters whose true stories and genius have been hidden in plain sight-and the book Danyel Smith was born to write. Smith’s detailed narrative begins with Phillis Wheatley, an enslaved woman who sang her poems, and continues through the stories of Mahalia Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and Mariah Carey, as well as the under-considered careers of Marilyn McCoo, Deniece Williams, and Jody Watley. But as a music fan, and then as an essayist, editor (Vibe, Billboard), and podcast host (Black Girl Songbook), she has been living this history since she was a latchkey kid listening to “Midnight Train to Georgia” on the family stereo. We’ve seen so much of Mariana’s memories of their romance, with nothing to make it seem like he manipulated his way into her life. But Zoe’s affair with Sebastian felt forced into the book for a Big Shock. She’s basically the only person Mariana hasn’t worried about, which often makes for the perfect thriller reveal. Well, I guess that was technically possible.”Īfter all the misdirections around Henry / Feed / Julian / Fosca, I wasn’t 100% shocked to find it was Zoe all along. I prefer a surprise reveal that feels like “OMG, IT WAS THERE ALL ALONG!” to “Huh. And I mostly loved it, I loved reading it, just when a thriller does a huge surprise reveal, I enjoy it more when there was a hint or two before that. I know I’m in the minority here - social media is just full of readers in love with this book. I have to admit that found the ending of The Maidens a bit unsatisfying. If you haven’t read the book yet, please read my regular review instead! This page contains spoilers for The Maidens. Fierstein, who, with his throaty Tallulah voice and manner, stars in his own touching triptych. The evening is a double tour de force for Mr. Fierstein's work, three plays that give us a progressively dramatic and illuminating portrait of a man who laughs, and makes us laugh, to keep from collapsing. Those alterations - Arnold is a homosexual and a professional ''drag queen'' - are the substance but not the sum of Mr. At the end of a long, infinitely rewarding evening in the company of Arnold and his family and friends, he confesses with a sigh that he has always wanted exactly the life that his mother has had - ''with certain minor alterations.'' Arnold Beckoff, the lonely but far-from-forlorn hero of Harvey Fierstein's ''Torch Song Trilogy,'' is a diehard romantic who takes his heart, soul and fatalism from the 1920's ballads that give the work its title and its tone.
